  Tips To Prevent Home Invasions:

  • Install deadbolts, with steel jams, they will not splinter like wood, making it difficult to kick a door open.
  • Patio doors can be easily lifted disengaging from the locking mechanism this is especially true for door walls. A few years old and jams have expanded. An easy and cost effective way to secure the patio door is to secure a pole in-between the patio door end and the wall. Placing the pole on the track will prevent the door wall from being opened. Have the pole cut the same length as the track area when the door wall is closed.
  • To keep the door from being lifted or removed install flat-headed metal screws into the top of the patio doorframe, one should be six inches from the edge and one in the middle. Make sure the screw is just above the door so it won't interfere with the door sliding open and close.
  • There are many items on the market that you can purchase for securing patio doors such as patio door locks, door pins and security bars. You can buy these items at your local hardware store.
  • Lighting is an excellent deterrent. Install outside motion sensor lighting. If possible install flood lights on each of the four corners of your home
  • Home alarm systems are great and there are different types, make sure that the alarm system your getting has service that monitors your home and contacts proper authorities when the alarm goes off. Make sure the Alarm Company knows which police department to contact for your jurisdiction. Also make sure to post alarm stickers on your doors it deters home invasions by 80% even if you don't have an alarm system.

  • Use tempered glass, fully tempered glass is 4 to 5 times stronger than regular glass
  • Laminated glass is also strong, you need to hit the glass at the same spot a few times just to make a small hole, also makes a bit of noise when you strike it
  • Wired glass needs to be hit than when glass brakes the wire needs to be cut, its time consuming which burglars don’t like & the wire is a visible deterrent
  • Plastic material are sometimes 200 more times resilient to impact, check with your local dealer
  • Watch out for what you put out in your trash i.e. boxes from electronics in plain view, cut all boxes up & place in a bag
  • Shred all personal information papers

  Travel

Hotel rooms should have doors made of solid wood or metal this will best protect you. If the door lock looks worn or signs of pry marks around lock area, get another room or go to another hotel. Knob locks should have a button on the inside knob and block out all keys. This prevents former guests from entering your room. Hotels with electronic card access are more secure if you choose hotels with this feature. The room door should have a wide-angle peephole so you know who is at your door. Make sure all windows and sliding doors are secured if they are accessible from the ground. It is a good idea to pull on all windows and glass doors to test how secure they are. Be aware of balconies where someone can climb from one balcony to another and be able to enter your room.   Security Technology Tips

Security technology advances have allowed us to have an enhanced level of protection while at the same time reducing the cost. Here are some different ways in protecting your home with technology. Card access systems is the best system for opening doors, gates, and records the time, date that room was entered and can be programmed for no access.

Vendors now make computer based key control system that safely stores and codes each key and can be password protected. Just like the card access system the computer knows at all times and records the key's history

Video systems work 24 hours a day and never blink. When cameras are installed make sure they are placed where they can not be tampered with, able to identify vehicle makes, license plates and individuals identities. Cameras have to be protected from the weather with weatherproof housing. The lens must adjust automatically to changing lighting conditions for the best picture quality. When using gates tailgating can be a problem, tailgating is the practice of following an authorized vehicle through the gates before it closes. Educate people to stop and wait for the gate to close before driving away or if needed post a guard at the gate or a high-speed swing arm. There are many other systems coming out from day to day contact your security technology store to find out what is on the market.

Alarm Systems:

  • With alarm systems make sure that the service that monitors your home contacts the proper authorities when the alarm is triggered. Make sure the alarm company knows which police department to contact for your jurisdiction
  • Alarm systems should be installed by a professional so they can be properly installed, programmed and maintained
  • Alarm systems need to have an audible bell to be effective
  • Alarm systems should automatically reset in one minute or less
  • Alarm response call-list should be always up to date

The harder you make breaking into your home the better. Sometimes spending that little extra money saves on your peace of mind and on your insurance rates.

Tips When Dealing With Weapons

Stun Guns:

There are three types of stun gun weapons 1. Stun Gun 2. Taser Gun 3. Liquid Stun Gun. Stun Guns use a 9-volt battery & work using an electrical high voltage to stop an attacker by effecting their nervous system. The effect to the body is having difficulties to move, disorientation, loss of balance and being confused, lasting for several minutes. The effects are non-lethal & no permanent or serious injury is caused. Half a second contact with a stun gun will startle your attacker within 3 seconds the full effect will take place.

  • Hold the stun gun to the attacker until they are down & no less
  • The stun gun should be placed on the part of the body that has a lot of surface area i.e. chest, back, abs. It will also work on less surface areas such as an arm but it may take alittle longer for the effect to set in
  • The higher the voltage the quicker the effect (difference between a second or two)
  • Always make sure you have a live battery in your stun gun ( 9 volt)
  • When testing only fire for 1 or 2 seconds in the air , any longer may do damage to the stun gun cause its not grounded
  • Test every 3 months

Taser Guns:

You can stun attackers from a further distance with a Taser Gun usually 15 to 20 feet but you only get one chance then you have to reload, most Tasers now have a Stun Gun electrodes incase you miss with the Taser. The way a Taser works is that electrodes are launched into the air hitting the target, these electrodes have small barbs so they will attach to the attackers clothes, stunning him.

Liquid Types:

This is a newer type of Stun Gun usually used by military & police a liquid stream (which needs to be carted around) is used to conduct electricity instead of wires. They have a longer firing distance & shot many times over

Pepper Spray:

The effects of Pepper Spray are the eyes tearing up, closing of eyes due to dilation effects last 30-60 minutes. Respiration system is also effected swelling of the throat, coughing, gasping for air & gagging. Respiratory system becomes normal usually after 30 minutes. Do not panic when your attacker is gasping for air the airway stays open enough to receive oxygen to survive. Skin as a burning sensation & there is a loss of balance due to the effects on vision.

  • Check with State & Provincial laws if Pepper Spray is legal in your area
  • Make sure to have distance between your attacker & you, aim at the eyes & face for 2 seconds, move out of the way & keep your eye on your attacker because sometimes the spray doesn’t take effect on some people for a few seconds. Sometimes you even need to spray a second time, get out as of the situation as fast as you can.
  • Make sure to test your Pepper Spray every 3 months by holding & spraying for a second, spray in an upwind direction

Tear Gas:

Tear Gas is more of a distraction giving you time to get away from your attacker. It as little stopping power & does not subdue your attacker so you still can get hit even if you sprayed your attacker. Studies have shown little or no affect on drug induced, intoxicated or mentally ill individuals.

Tear Gas Tips:

  • If you use Tear Gas spray a lot at the attacker & run
  • Shake the canister every 30 days

Edged Weapons:

  • Realize you will get cut
  • Protect your vital organs
  • Guard position: Use forearms as a shield to block the blade (i.e. back of hands facing your attacker) this will prevent blade from cutting the organs in your wrist
  • Try to wrap your free hand with something to deflect the blade
  • Be light on your feet

Firearms:

  • Keep your gun close so it can not be grabbed
  • Make sure the safety is off and round is chambered
  • Keep an eye on attacker even AFTER you shot him
